Classes at MUD
Our classes are designed for all skill levels, whether you’re a complete beginner or someone looking to refine your ceramic skills. Led by dedicated and accomplished ceramicists who sell their work both in Washington and globally, our classes provide an inspiring and supportive environment to explore the world of clay.
We offer three main classes: “Introduction to Pottery”, an 8-week hand-building class, “Wheel Throwing Essentials”, an 8-week wheel throwing class, and “Ceramics Intensive”, which is a 12-week comprehensive class that covers both techniques. Additionally, we offer project-based workshops from time to time, such as tile making and Kintsugi/Gold Repair.
No matter which class you choose, you'll be guided through each step of the ceramic process, from shaping your first piece of clay to the excitement of seeing your finished, glazed work emerge from the kiln.
Our classes lead students through each step of the ceramic creation process.
Students will learn hand-building techniques such as pinching, coiling, and slab building, and/or how to use the wheel to create various shapes. Once your pieces are formed, the drying process begins. As the clay reaches the “leather-hard” stage, you’ll have the opportunity to refine details and add decorative touches before your work is bisque-fired in our kiln at approximately 1945°F. After this initial firing, your pieces will be ready for glazing, and once they undergo a final high-temperature firing, they’ll be transformed into durable, finished ceramics.
In a 12-week class, students typically have time to create 4-6 finished pieces, while in an 8-week class, students can expect to complete 2-4 pieces.
There is a $3 per pound materials fee for glaze firing, and we encourage students to be mindful in selecting which pieces they fire. Since glaze firing is irreversible and fired clay cannot be recycled, we aim to minimize waste and ensure that each piece fired is one you truly want to keep. However, any unfired clay can be reclaimed and reused.
At the end of the class, students have the option to return for two scheduled appointments: a Pick-Up/Glazing Appointment and a Final Pick-Up Appointment, generally held three and six weeks after the class ends, respectively. The first appointment allows students to glaze any unfinished work and collect previously completed pieces, while the final appointment is for picking up the pieces that were glazed at the Pick-Up/Glazing Appointment, now fully fired and finished.
For those who wish to continue their ceramic journey beyond class, we offer a special membership perk: students who sign up for a membership at MUD after completing a class receive a free 25-pound bag of white stoneware clay and no firing fees for the pieces they created during class.
Whether you’re here to try something new or deepen your love for ceramics, we can’t wait to welcome you to the studio and see what you create.
