This course is suitable for those with no prior pottery experience, as well as those who have worked with clay before but want a refresher.

We will cover pottery studio operations, basic wheel throwing techniques, hand building techniques, and clay/glaze science.

The course is designed to teach both hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques to all students. During most lessons, the group will be split in half, with one half working on the wheel and the other half working on hand-building projects. The groups will then switch so that everyone has the opportunity to practice both techniques.

By the end of this course, you will be able to confidently navigate the pottery studio, and will have acquired the necessary skills to pursue whatever you wish to create with clay. Those who have completed this course will qualify for membership at MUD, and will receive a 25 lbs bag of clay (white stoneware) free when they sign up for any of our membership options. Because this course is focused on exploration and deepening of technical skill rather than producing a large volume of work, students should expect to take home 4-6 finished pieces.

Please note: Before attending your first class, we ask that you familiarize yourself with the MUD Ceramics Studio handbook and sign our liability waiver. The signed waiver can be returned either via email (office@mudceramics.org) or in person at the studio.

MUD Ceramics Studio does not offer glaze appointments after a class has finished. Ceramics naturally involve multiple stages (greenware, bisqueware, and glazed work) so it’s common to have pieces in various stages at the end of a class, and as a result students should expect to pick up both bisqueware and glazed pieces post-class. There is an additional firing fee of $3 per pound for each piece a student wishes to glaze fire and take home, but no firing fee is applied to bisqued work.

In the event of adverse weather conditions, MUD Ceramics Studio will remain open for classes unless a Travel Advisory is issued recommending the suspension of non-essential travel.
