If you’re wanting to learn how to create pottery on the wheel, our 8-week Wheel Throwing Essentials course is the perfect place to start. Designed for beginners and those seeking a comprehensive refresher, this class introduces the foundational skills needed to create beautiful and functional wheel-thrown pottery.
The course begins with mastering the essential skill of centering clay on the wheel. From there, students will learn to shape basic forms such as bowls and cups, gradually progressing to more advanced techniques like trimming and decorating. The final sessions will cover the glazing process, completing your journey from raw clay to finished pottery. Along the way, students will also gain insight into basic pottery studio operations and the science of clay and glazes.
This course emphasizes skill development and exploration rather than mass production, ensuring that you build a strong technical foundation. By the end of the course, students can expect to take home 2-4 finished pieces that showcase their progress and newfound abilities.
Graduates of Wheel Throwing Essentials will qualify for membership at MUD. To get you started, if you choose to sign up for a membership after your class you’ll receive a complimentary 25 lbs bag of white stoneware clay.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or returning to the wheel after some time away, this course provides the instruction, guidance, and inspiration needed to start your wheel-throwing journey with confidence!
Please note:
MUD does not offer make-up classes for missed sessions, including absences due to illness, travel, or personal scheduling conflicts. Our classes follow a structured curriculum, and missed instruction cannot be rescheduled. We encourage students to carefully review the class dates before enrolling to ensure they can attend all sessions.
Our pottery wheels use a magnetic drive, which may pose a risk to individuals with a pacemaker. For your safety, it is mandatory to consult your physician before enrolling in a wheel throwing class if you have a pacemaker. The studio assumes no liability for any harm or injury that may occur as a result of participation.
There is an additional firing fee of $3 per pound for each piece a student wishes to glaze fire and take home, but no firing fee is applied to bisqued work.
In the event of adverse weather conditions, MUD Ceramics Studio will remain open for classes unless a Travel Advisory is issued recommending the suspension of non-essential travel.
